lenten small groups

Each year during Lent (the 40 days, not including Sundays before Easter), the congregation joins small groups and reads and discusses a book on the Bible, or Christian faith. Past books have included Joan Gray's Sailboat Church, Rowan Williams Meeting God in Paul, and Adam Hamilton's The Message of Jesus.

This year's book is called Meeting Jesus on the Road. Lenten Study Leader Paul Urian gives a great description: Readers are invited to journey alongside Christ through the Gospel stories that define his earthly path. Gathering a group of disciples around him, Jesus travelled the region, teaching, healing, and proclaiming that the reign of God is at hand. He met them all with compassion. He brought them hope. From the Jordan River to the hills of Galilee and beyond, Jesus calls us—like the first disciples—to follow, listen, question, and grow.

For 2026 there are three in-person groups with spots available and one Zoom meeting group.

Groups with openings include Paul's group that will meet in his home from 7:30 to 9 p.m., from Feb. 19 to March 26; Deb Nussbaum's group that will meet in the Parlor Thursday's at 2 p.m. for five weeks beginning Feb. 19; Becky Bryan and Maggie Sell's Zoom group which will meet on Tuesday evenings beginning Feb. 24 and David Stedman and Nancy Ruth Wainwright's group that will meet in the Parlor on Mondays at 10 a.m. beginning Feb. 23.
