Jesus in His Easter Best

“The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he is girded with strength” (Psalm 93:1).

Once when I read this psalm, my mind seized on the word “robe,” and then it went to my old plaid bathrobe I’ve owned for decades now. I imagine that God in heaven has a better robe to wear than mine!

Someone suggested that Mary Magdalene mistook the resurrected Jesus for a gardener because once Jesus got untangled from his burial shroud, he had no clothes to wear, so he sneaked into the gardener’s shed and borrowed a pair of overalls. When you don’t have a bathrobe handy, you make do!

When the Word of God became flesh, it was as if he robed himself in a human body to conceal his divine majesty. Now that he is raised from the dead, his body reveals his divine majesty, for he lives in a body that will never again suffer, or feel pain, or die.
So whether you’re eight years old and have scrapes and bruises on your knees, or 48 and your knees are feeling the first effects of arthritis, or 78 and you’re on your second knee replacement, believe that in Christ, God has promised to give our bodies a kind of healing and restoration that lasts forever. The same promise is for those whose bodies have been torn apart by bullets, or are underfed, or violated.

Easter is the Good News that God saves the whole person, body and soul, from sin and from death.
