“Jesus of Nazareth in Art”

from 11:25 a.m. (following worship) to 12:05 p.m. and will be led by David Stedman. All are welcome!

  • February 17 The Nature of Early Christian Art- Christian art goes hand in hand with Christian dogma, and it stressed not so much Jesus of Nazareth, but rather Christ the Lord. Until the 3rdcentury A.D. Christian art consisted mainly of frescos in the catacombs and art on sarcophagi. After the rise of Christianity to a place of prominence in the 4thcentury Roman Empire, Christ became the Lord of All—the Pantocrator—seen on high in his mandorla. These continued in the Eastern Church as Icons. Then in the Middle Ages the concept of Jesus as the Light of the World was followed in the West by emphasis on two types of Crucifixion, A Christ on the Cross victorious, and later a very human Christ on the Cross in terrible suffering and/or dead. JAC Book Discussion

JUSTICE AND ADVOCACY BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION – Next Sunday, February 24th immediately after the 10 am service we will meet to discuss Christ & Culture by H. Richard Niebuhr. “Niebuhr speaks of Christ and culture as two points of reference for faith and ethics and challenges a new generation of Christians to be true to Christ in a materialistic age.” In other words, how is Christ relevant in our daily lives? How does our faith intersect with what is happening in our culture? Questions? Contact Becky Bryan 856-986-8594 or email, rebeccabryan@me.com.
