Thanksgiving Questions

Thanksgiving Questions

In her latest newsletter, Amy Julia Becker shared five questions that she’s going to pose to her Thanksgiving dinner table guests. Here are her questions, with my answers in red:

Who is someone not at this table you’re thankful for? I’m thankful for my father, with whom I shared 20 Thanksgiving dinners before he died in 1990. Dad laughed a lot, loved his family very much, and instilled in me a love for the outdoors and NC State basketball (more of a curse than a blessing, but I don’t mind too much!)

Why are you thankful for people at the table? I definitely married up when I married Laura! She has brought out the best in me.  So has our son Ethan, in different ways. My mother, like my father, has loved us—in deeds, not just words—and instilled in us faith in God and Christ. My sister and brother-in-law are great cooks and fun to be around. There was even a time when my brother-in-law helped me stand upright on a surfboard and catch a wave!

What is one organization (school, church, non-profit, restaurant, etc.) you’re thankful for? I’m thankful for First Presbyterian Church! I appreciate the kindness and creativity of our community of faith. I feel very thankful that you called me to be your pastor.

What is one media source (podcast, author, show, album) you’re thankful for? The OG Podcast, hosted by Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio (no, not the WIP Giglio, but a guy from Bayonne who went to NC State and never left North Carolina) keeps me updated on the ACC football and basketball teams I love and hate the most.

What is one additional moment, person, or thing you’re thankful for right now? These cats:

The unity of believers in Christ is reflected in the rich diversity of the Church’s membership. In Christ, by the power of the Spirit, God unites persons through baptism regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, geography, or theological conviction.
